Chicken Butchery Workshop

Event Date:

September 2, 2022

Event Time:

10:00 am

Event Location:

Value Life Farm

We are delighted to be able to offer a hands on chicken butchery workshop. You will leave the workshop with the knowledge and confidence to process your own chickens at home. With all of the constant and relentless uncertainty in the world, the real life skills of being able to feed your family may have never been more important.

We will work through how to use modern day equipment such as a poultry plucker, but also the very basics of how you can do small numbers at home with just what you already have at hand.

The workshop covers handling chickens correctly, humane slaughter, plucking, evisceration, chicken cut up, bagging and storage considerations.

Lunch will be provided

Chickens will be available for purchase on the day as well as our usual offerings of Pork, Chicken and Goat.

Book in now as numbers are limited to a small group so as to ensure maximum benefit to all participants.

**Please note the Couples ticket pricing is intended to help individuals convince their partners to be involved. If you and your friend would like to attend then please select the 2 x Singles tickets rather than the couples. If you have more than two of you (3 or more friends) please contact us to get the reduced ticket pricing for the group. Thank you

Event FAQs

What should I wear?
We recommend that all attendee’s come dressed with sturdy enclosed shoes, long pants and layers to accomodate variable changes in temperature. You should expect to get dirty and wet. Rain pants and gumboots, whilst not absolutely necessary, would make for a more comfortable experience. You may wish to wear gloves (something like gardening gloves) for part of the process, however most choose not too.

We recommend sun safe attire as well as a jacket if it cools off as you will be spending the entire time outdoors and mostly in the open.
Are there toilet facilities?
Facilities

We have limited facilities at our property, having moved here in 2019 and the property being undeveloped and off-grid.

Very basic compost toilet and soap and water washing facilities are available.
What safety factors should I consider before attending?
Safety

Please be aware, we are small operational family farm and the intention of the day is for you to get hands on experience with handling chickens and processing them which involves using hot water, naked flame, knives, etc. You must demonstrate commonsense and due care at all times

Please note that we do not have public liability insurance, so people need to understand they come at their own risk. We request you follow any safety precautions and directions. And accept that there are inherent risks involved in participating in the workshop.

Fences are electrified and entry to paddocks with livestock is not permitted without our express permission and supervision.
How do I get there?
Directions:

We are 30 minutes from Queanbeyan and Bungendore and 50 minutes from Canberra.

The main section you will find hard is the last bit. Just on the other side of Hoskinstown (only about 200m of road through Hoskinstown) you will turn left onto Forbes Creek Road. You will travel along Forbes Creek Road for about 4kms. You will get to an intersection near a bus shelter and turn left onto Old Mill Road. You will travel along this road for about 4km and you will come to a section just over a rise that has three roads (one straight ahead, one to the right and one to the left). You will take the road/driveway to the left - it has the number 263 listed.  You will travel down our driveway until you see all our paddocks and sheds.
